The plan involves training approximately 200 emergency medical responders (EMRs) within the next two years. This strategic move aims to decrease wait times, improve ambulance availability, and enable paramedics to concentrate on more critical cases, marking a transformative step in the province's healthcare delivery.


Transforming Emergency Medical Services in Nova Scotia

The initiative promises to revolutionize EMS in Nova Scotia. By equipping EMRs with the skills to stabilize, assess, and transport patients, the province is ensuring a more efficient and responsive healthcare system. A key aspect of this program is the deployment of EMRs in emergency department offload areas, facilitating a smoother transition from field care to hospital treatment. Notably, EMRs will manage the transfer of low-risk patients, allowing paramedics to focus on high-priority emergencies.


Training and Empowering the Next Wave of EMRs

Medavie HealthEd has been entrusted with leading this innovative training program, commencing in March. The three-month training curriculum is designed to furnish trainees with essential skills in patient assessment, stabilization, and transportation. Post-training, these individuals will be licensed and regulated by the College of Paramedics of Nova Scotia. Adherence to high standards of care is ensured through a mandatory national exam overseen by the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators.


The Anticipated Impact and Response from the Industry

The industry eagerly anticipates the introduction of the first group of trained EMRs by summer. Charbel J. Daniel, a notable figure in provincial EMS operations, has voiced his support for the initiative. He highlights the success of integrating EMRs in other regions and predicts a similar positive outcome for Nova Scotia. Furthermore, the program includes a bridging scheme for EMRs aspiring to become paramedics, thereby establishing a sustainable talent reservoir for the EMS in Nova Scotia.
